GOLF COURSE REVIEW

BRG LEGEND HILL GOLF RESORT

Designer: Jack Nicklaus
Location: Soc Son, Hanoi
Style: Twin-green parkland
Cost: $240–355 NZD

Another different course, and this one had a lot more water in play — though we didn't lose too many balls to it. Same top-quality standard as everywhere else we played. The greens were a touch slower here, but still in great condition. We played the Masters Course.

It's a Jack Nicklaus design — Legend Hill was actually the first course in Vietnam he designed, opening in 2015 out at Soc Son near Hanoi. Every hole has two greens rather than one, a “twin green” layout that's unique in Vietnam, giving 36 green complexes across the 18 holes so the course can be set up a different way each round.

Service was top notch all round. But the clubhouse, although amazing and big, looked like it had its heyday a few years back — the fountains weren't running, and although it's still nicer than most clubhouses in New Zealand, it felt a bit unloved. Now I'm just being picky, because it's hard to fault. Must play.

THE VIETNAMTRIPPER VERDICT
Would we go again?
YES
Would we recommend it?
YES
Best thing: The twin-green Jack Nicklaus layout is genuinely unique in Vietnam — 36 greens on an 18-hole course, and a lot more water in play than anywhere else we played.
Worst thing: With that much water in play, you'll want to take a few extra balls — though we didn't lose too many.
